Project Citizen is a program, which advocates for youth to participate in government at different levels. It allows for young people to understand what it takes to change their community through public policy. The project requires students in groups of eight to create an action plan for a project in their community through governmental methods. Middle Years Programme freshman at Mount Pleasant High School have participated in the event since the 2012-2013 school year under the guidance of Mr. Bacon. The project concludes with a competition in the Mount Pleasant High School cafeteria which was held on March 8th.

The process for the project is a long one, the students began in December. However, it teaches the students a valuable lesson about how much work goes in to a public policy in government, Lucy James-Olson describes it, “Project Citizen made me realize the value of the community and of local government.” Brianna Thomas describes the impact it made outside of newfound knowledge about government, “Project Citizen allowed me to evaluate situations critically.” No matter what score one receives on their Project Citizen project, all can agree that it teaches a valuable lesson about what it takes to process something through government.
